Agreements between resource developers and potentially impacted Indigenous communities, commonly called Impact Benefit Agreements (IBAs), are legally required in much of Northern Canada and have become best practice in the rest of Canada.  They can contribute to sustainable socio-economic development for Indigenous peoples, and regulatory certainly for resource developers. The use of IBAs is likely to increase as jurisprudence on the duty to consult develops, and companies focus on ESG.
